Detailed Narrative
Apple Intelligence Driving Product Demand
Apple Intelligence, launched in October and expanded in December, is showing early signs of positively impacting iPhone demand. Markets where Apple Intelligence features were available saw stronger year-over-year performance for the iPhone 16 family compared to markets where it was not. Key features like Writing Tools, Image Playground, Genmoji, and Clean Up are being actively used by customers, with further language rollouts planned for April.
Strong Performance in Mac and iPad Categories
The Mac and iPad segments demonstrated robust growth, with Mac revenue up 16% and iPad revenue up 15% year-over-year. This growth was attributed to strong uptake of new products, including M4-based Macs, and the continued success of the MacBook Air. The company noted that over half of iPad sales in the quarter were to new customers, indicating continued market expansion.
Emerging Markets as a Growth Driver
Apple continues to see significant momentum in emerging markets, with all-time revenue records set in Latin America, the Middle East, and South Asia. India was highlighted as a particularly strong market, setting a December quarter record and seeing the iPhone as a top-selling model. The company plans to open four new stores in India, emphasizing the long-term growth potential in these regions where Apple currently holds modest market share.
Services Business Continues Record Growth
The Services segment achieved an all-time revenue record of $26.3 billion, growing 14% year-over-year. This growth was broad-based across all geographic segments and service offerings. The installed base of active devices reached a new all-time high of over 2.35 billion, contributing to increased customer engagement and over 1 billion paid subscriptions across the platform.
Capital Return Program and Cash Position
Apple ended the quarter with $141 billion in cash and marketable securities and a net cash position of $45 billion. The company returned over $30 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including $3.9 billion in dividends and $23.3 billion through open market repurchases of 100 million Apple shares. An update to the capital return program is expected with the March quarter results.
