Detailed Narrative
First Half Performance Highlights
Corteva delivered strong top and bottom-line growth in the second quarter and first half of 2025. Organic sales were up 7% in Q2 and 5% in H1, with both Seed and Crop Protection contributing. Operating EBITDA grew 13% in Q2 and 14% in H1, leading to significant margin expansion of 215 basis points in Q2 and 300 basis points in H1, driven by organic sales growth, lower input costs, and productivity.
Cost and Productivity Initiatives
The company exceeded its 2025 net cost improvement target in the first half, leading to an increased full-year target of $450 million from $400 million. Seed and Crop Protection combined to deliver over $400 million in productivity and cost benefits in H1, stemming from lower seed commodity costs, raw material deflation, and ongoing productivity actions. These initiatives are a key lever for achieving the 2027 financial framework.
Seed Business Momentum
Seed demonstrated impressive performance in H1, with 280 basis points of operating EBITDA margin expansion and pricing gains across most regions. Volume improvement in North America made a significant contribution, and the company believes it delivered healthy branded share gains in both corn and soybeans. Out-licensing results also exceeded expectations, providing a $70 million net royalty benefit in H1.
Crop Protection Dynamics
The Crop Protection business saw double-digit volume growth in Q2 and 8% in H1, led by Latin America and strong performance in new products and biologicals. Despite these gains, the segment faced competitive market dynamics, resulting in a 2% price decline in H1 and an expected low to mid-single-digit decline in H2. However, management noted that the overall CP market is slowly improving with stabilized generic pricing.
Updated Full-Year Outlook
Corteva raised its full-year operating EBITDA guidance midpoint to $3.8 billion, representing 13% growth. Operating EPS guidance was increased to $3 to $3.20 per share, up 21% at the midpoint. Free cash flow guidance was also raised to approximately $1.9 billion, with a cash conversion rate of about 50%, primarily due to earnings growth and lower cash taxes from recent legislation.
Capital Allocation Strategy
The company remains on track for $1 billion in share repurchases in 2025 and announced a nearly 6% increase in its annual dividend, marking the fifth consecutive annual increase. Combined, these actions are expected to return approximately $1.5 billion in cash to shareholders during 2025, reflecting a strong balance sheet and cash flow outlook.
Market Fundamentals and 2026 Outlook
Ag fundamentals are mixed, with growing demand for grains and oilseeds but moderated crop prices. Despite expectations for a record U.S. harvest, the stocks-to-use ratio for corn is expected to remain below historical averages. Management remains constructive on growth for 2026, anticipating it will keep the company well within its 2027 financial framework, with more details to be provided in Q3.
