    Q&A highlights

    6

What were the main reasons for the 3% revenue decline in FY26, which was below expectations?

Peter Warwick explained that the decline was primarily due to a challenging comparable in Q4 FY26 against the strong performance of 'Sunrise on the Reaping' in Q4 FY25, and lower-than-expected revenue from the Education segment due to funding volatility and a lack of surge in spending by schools at year-end.

I mean the 2 main factors were that in the fourth quarter, we had a very challenging comparable situation because of the great success that we had with Sunrise on the reaping in the fourth quarter of 2025. So that was one of the factors that was there. That was a more, shall we say, predictable factor. A less predictable factor was the fact that we also didn't get as much revenue from the education segment as we were expecting because in common with many other providers, particularly supplementary education providers. And there wasn't the surge in spending by schools and districts towards the end of their public sector financial year.

    Detailed Narrative

    01

Strategic Transformation and Balance Sheet Optimization

Fiscal 2026 marked a significant year for Scholastic's transformation, focusing on governance, organization, strategy, and balance sheet efficiency. The company refreshed its Board, strengthened management, and reorganized to create integrated growth platforms. Major steps were taken to optimize the balance sheet, including sale-leaseback transactions that unlocked over $400 million in net proceeds, which were used to increase liquidity and accelerate shareholder returns. This transformation reinforces Scholastic's long-term strategy and commitment to disciplined investment and capital returns.

    02

Children's Book Group Momentum and Strategy

The Children's Book Group (CBG), encompassing publishing and school-based channels, is a central pillar of Scholastic's growth. Book Fairs continued to be a core earnings engine, with growth driven by higher fair counts, improved revenue per fair, and increased adoption of digital tools like eWallet. The company is expanding its reach to new school communities and formats, including discovery fairs and sponsored corporate events. Scholastic Trade publishing benefits from a strong pipeline of new releases and major franchises like Dog Man, The Hunger Games, and Harry Potter, with significant media events expected to drive demand and introduce new readers.

    03

Entertainment Division Expansion and Franchise Reinforcement

Scholastic Entertainment is broadening how children engage with Scholastic stories across various media. The successful integration of 9 Story Media Group provides a complete platform for developing trusted children's content. The division built momentum in FY26 with double-digit production revenue growth and continued activity across major franchises. Upcoming projects include a new Clifford the Big Red Dog animated series (PBS Kids, 2027) and a live-action Magic School Bus feature film starring Elizabeth Banks. Digital platforms like YouTube and the Scholastic TV app are also extending reach, with significant increases in views and watch time for Scholastic properties.

    04

Education Segment Repositioning and Market Alignment

The Education segment is navigating a pressured purchasing environment due to funding volatility, but performance improved in the second half of FY26. Scholastic is repositioning the business around its core literacy strengths, aligning with the macro shift towards science-based reading instruction and whole books. The company has a stronger product portfolio, improved cost structure, and is reorganizing go-to-market activities with a new Chief Revenue Officer. The goal for FY27 is to stabilize revenue and improve profitability, leveraging Scholastic's unique position to address the increasing focus on children's reading achievement and reduced screen time.

    05

    International Growth and Industry Recognition

Scholastic's international business extends its publishing, franchises, and literacy expertise globally, benefiting from similar trends seen in the U.S. The company combines locally developed publishing with global franchise strength, with major franchises like Dog Man and The Hunger Games performing well. Scholastic's international strength was recognized with multiple awards at the British Book Awards, including Children's Publisher of the Year, Illustrator of the Year for Dave Pilkey, and Children's Fiction Book of the Year and Marketing Strategy of the Year for Sunrise on the Reaping. The company sees opportunities to expand franchises and improve operating efficiency in priority markets.
