Detailed narrative
Strategic Review and Turnaround Initiative
Albertsons has initiated a comprehensive business review and turnaround plan, acknowledging that sales and earnings growth have not met expectations and market share trends have lagged. Executive Chair Meg Whitman emphasized the need for faster action to reduce costs, reinvest savings into lower prices, improve the store experience, and drive traffic and share.
The company aims to become simpler and more focused, with all options on the table to enhance shareholder value and change the business's trajectory.
Q2 Performance and Headwinds
The company reported a 0.8% decline in identical sales for Q2 FY27, with adjusted EBITDA at $784 million and adjusted EPS at $0.36 per share. Performance was impacted by significant headwinds totaling approximately 210 basis points, including 120 bps from the Inflation Reduction Act, 30 bps from a brand/generic prescription mix shift, 30 bps from the Cyclospora outbreak affecting produce sales, and 30 bps from cycling egg deflation.
Despite these, e-commerce grew 11% and pharmacy ID sales showed strength.
Accelerated Cost Savings and Productivity
Albertsons is accelerating its cost savings program, which was previously increased from $1.5 billion to $2 billion over three years. Management believes there is further room for aggressive cost reduction, particularly in third-party spend (goods for resale and not for resale), SG&A, and store execution.
Initiatives include improving inventory discipline, reducing shrink, and recommitting to high store standards, with aggressive action expected in SG&A over the next 12 to 18 months.
Customer Value Proposition and Pricing Strategy
The company is focused on improving its customer value proposition, recognizing that price, promotions, freshness, convenience, selection, and service all matter. While not aiming to be the cheapest, Albertsons plans surgical and strategic price investments by market and category, leveraging data-driven insights from past price campaigns.
The goal is to offer a balanced value proposition that resonates with customers, supported by a strong loyalty program and personalized offers.
Portfolio Optimization and Capital Allocation
Albertsons will undertake a disciplined review of its portfolio, identifying strong banners and valuable assets while also evaluating underperforming areas for potential exit. The strategy involves investing more effectively in markets where the company holds a #1 or #2 market share position.
Capital allocation will be holistic and disciplined, aiming to create long-term shareholder value, with a comprehensive framework to be detailed by the Q4 earnings call.
Evolution of ACI Edge and Operational Focus
The ACI Edge initiative, which involved moving from 11 divisions to 4 regions and centralizing center store merchandising, is being accelerated. This evolution aims to improve buying, find savings to pass to customers, and simplify the operational model. Regional executive vice presidents are tasked with elevating store conditions and maintaining focus on customer service, insulating stores from broader strategic distractions.
Leveraging Technology and AI for Turnaround
Technology, particularly AI, is viewed as critical to the turnaround efforts. Albertsons is leveraging its four AI 'big bets' to accelerate improvements in store standards, customer value, and cost reduction. These include merch intelligence for category decisions (assortment, pricing, promotion), store labor optimization for productivity, and demand forecasting to improve in-stock results and inventory management from farm to table.
