Detailed narrative
Wildfire and Operational Resilience
The company faced challenges from the Caribou Lake wildfire near Foster Creek and Christina Lake, leading to a brief shutdown and evacuation of over 2,000 workers. Production at Christina Lake was safely ramped back up to 250,000 bbl/d within a week, demonstrating strong operational response and asset integrity. This effort included restarting 26 boilers and 50 kilometers of steam pipelines, all without damage to assets.
Major Project Advancement
Significant progress was made on key growth projects. Narrows Lake tieback achieved first oil in July, expected to ramp up production over the remainder of the year, maximizing value from the asset with a lower steam-oil ratio. The West White Rose project saw the concrete gravity structure placed on the seabed and topsides lifted in mid-July, both ahead of schedule.
Hookup and commissioning activities have now begun, with drilling from the platform planned before year-end for first oil in Q2 2026.
Maintenance and Reliability
Cenovus successfully completed heavy maintenance periods, including turnarounds at Foster Creek, Sunrise, and Toledo Refinery, all ahead of schedule and under budget. The Toledo turnaround involved taking down 8 major refinery units on the east side of the plant, with costs at the low end of guidance.
This marks the end of a $900 million maintenance cycle over the last six quarters, providing a clear runway for improved downstream performance through 2026 and 2027.
Upstream Production and Costs
Q2 upstream production was 766,000 BOE/d, impacted by turnarounds and the Rush Lake incident. A casing failure at an injector well at Rush Lake led to the shutdown of Rush Lake 1 and 2 facilities, which had been producing about 18,000 bbl/d; these volumes have been removed from guidance for the remainder of the year.
Oil sands non-fuel operating costs increased to $10.73/bbl due to turnaround activities and lower volumes, but are expected to decrease in the second half of the year.
Downstream Performance and Cost Efficiency
Canadian refining achieved a new quarterly high throughput of 112,000 bbl/d with 104% utilization, with the upgrader reaching crude rates as high as 87,000 bbl/d. U.S. refining throughput was 553,000 bbl/d. The company is focused on structurally removing costs, with Canadian refining operating costs decreasing to $10.63/bbl and U.S. refining costs decreasing to $10.52/bbl.
Management believes there's potential for another $2/bbl reduction in U.S. refining operating costs over time⏳ through continued tactical improvements and product placement optimization.
Financial Discipline and Shareholder Returns
Cenovus reduced net debt by $150 million in the quarter to $4.9 billion, moving closer to its $4 billion target. The company returned $819 million to shareholders through dividends, share buybacks ($300 million for 17 million shares at $17.50/share), and preferred share redemption. An additional $129 million (6.6 million shares) was repurchased post-quarter end through July 28, demonstrating continued commitment to shareholder returns.
M&A and Policy Environment
Management reiterated its consistent M&A strategy, stating no holes in the portfolio and that inorganic opportunities must compete with organic ones. The company views the federal government's recent engagement as constructive, but highlights persistent regulatory hurdles such as the tanker ban, emissions cap, and industrial carbon tax that need addressing to foster major project development and M&A activity in Canada, which would attract foreign capital and improve valuations.
