Richardson Electronics (RELL) Q1 FY27 earnings call: guidance and Q&A

Earnings call· Aug 2026 (Q1 FY27)· Information Technology· Oct 8, 2026

Source: earnings call transcript

Executive summary

Richardson Electronics Q1 FY27 — Sales +18.9%, operating income up 5x on PMT/GES strength and tariff refund

Strong, broad-based start to the year driven by semiconductor, RF/defense and wind demand, with the engineered-solutions and BESS strategy beginning to convert from development to commercial adoption. Profit quality is flattered by a non-recurring tariff refund, but backlog and operating leverage support a constructive stance. Management gave qualitative rather than numeric guidance.

Highlights

5
  • Net sales rose 18.9% to $64.9M vs $54.6M, the ninth consecutive quarterly YoY increase

  • Operating income rose over 400% to $5.1M (7.9% of sales) vs $1.0M; net income $4.1M, diluted EPS $0.27 vs $0.13

  • Operating cash flow $5.9M vs $1.4M; free cash flow $4.2M; cash $36.9M vs $31.8M at FY26 year-end, no debt

  • Backlog grew to $184.4M, up $20M from FY26 year-end (PMT $99.4M, GES $43.2M, Canvys $41.8M)

  • GES sales +27.1% and PMT +19.7%, led by semiconductor wafer fab, RF/microwave, wind products and new BESS products

Concerns

4
  • Gross margin of 34.6% included a 170 bps benefit from a one-time IEEPA tariff refund; management cannot say whether refunds will recur

  • Operating expenses rose to $17.4M from $16.0M on higher incentive compensation and travel

  • Canvys revenue was lower in Europe, and management cites variable freight, duties and tariffs and project timing

  • Macro uncertainty from trade policy, tariffs and geopolitics; project-based lumpy bookings in GES

Why it matters

Tests underlying margin quality

we are getting these refunds sporadically and they do not even really tell us what exactly, you know, time periods they relate to.

Detailed narrative

Consolidated results

Net sales rose 18.9% to $64.9M, the ninth straight YoY increase, with PMT up 19.7%, GES up 27.1% and Canvys up 7.9%. Gross margin reached 34.6% vs 31.0%, including 170 bps from an IEEPA tariff refund. Opex was 26.8% of sales vs 29.2%, producing operating income of $5.1M (7.9% of sales). EBITDA (non-GAAP) was $6.0M vs $3.3M.

PMT drivers

PMT excluding the legacy healthcare business had sales of $46.6M, up 23.1%, led by semiconductor wafer fab and RF/microwave in SATCOM, radar and defense communications. Semi-fab customers expect growth well into calendar 2027 and the company is adding shifts. Locomotive starter modules carry corporate-average margins; an IGBT module is in development.

GES, wind and BESS

GES growth came mostly from wind Pitch Energy Modules (over 23 customers, over 10 products, over 90,000 units shipped since launch). A $2M BEST order was booked and the pipeline is nearly 50 opportunities. The first Alaska order (18 systems across seven communities) began shipping, and Suzlon shipments were about $1.5M with OEM placement on the SX9 platform confirmed.

Wind products are accretive to margin, and GE wind share is below 20%.

Canvys

Canvys revenue was $8.9M, up 7.9%, with gross margin of 33.0% vs 30.9% mainly on the tariff refund. North America grew while Europe declined. Backlog is $41.8M with book-to-bill of 1.1; frame contracts can run two years or more.

Cash, inventory and capital allocation

Cash was $36.9M, free cash flow $4.2M, capex $1.7M on facilities and IT, and dividends paid $0.9M. Inventory was about $103.3M, flat versus year-end. Capital allocation remains focused on organic growth, with no revolver debt. An AI readiness assessment moved into implementation of practical use cases.

Made in America and new initiatives

Management sees rising interest in US-based engineering and manufacturing amid tariff and localization concerns. LaFox hosts a BEST demo center build-out. New programs include ultracapacitor racks for data centers, REST 211 and 422 systems, and the Goshen partnership.
